The newest powertrain addition to the Volkswagen brand family – the turbocharged, direct-injection 1.8-liter four-cylinder EA888 -- has been recognized as one of “Ward’s 10 Best Engines” for 2014. This is the Volkswagen Group’s third award for its turbocharged four-cylinder engines in this annual roundup of the latest and greatest in engine technology.

Eight WardsAuto editors chose the ten winners after spending this past fall evaluating 44 new or significantly upgraded engines during their routine daily commutes around metro Detroit. They scored each engine on power, torque, observed fuel economy, technology, relative competitiveness and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) characteristics.

Editors praised the 1.8-liter engine in the Jetta as “quiet, efficient and a riot to drive in sport mode, happily popping off the line even with a six-speed automatic transmission.” When paired with this transmission in the Jetta, the Silao, Mexico-built EA888 sees a five mpg improvement on the EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating over the previous 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine.

“There are lots of good four-cylinder turbocharged engines in the U.S. market, but VW’s all-new 1.8-liter is the new benchmark,” said Tom Murphy, Executive Editor, WardsAuto World magazine. “Judge it on refinement, power, affordability and fuel economy, and it becomes clear this engine is second to none.”
