VOLKSWAGEN ANDRETTI RALLYCROSS HEADS TO AUSTIN WITH AMERICAS RALLYCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP IN SIGHT
Sep 28, 2018
Scott Speed and Tanner Foust will battle for the drivers’ title at the finale of the inaugural ARX season
Herndon, VA (September 28, 2018) — Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross is the odds-on favorite to walk away with another pair of rallycross championships after the Americas Rallycross (ARX) season finale at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, this weekend. Having clinched the team championship during the series’ penultimate outing at Trois-Rivières in Canada, the Indianapolis-based outfit is set to add to its driver championship tally with both Scott Speed and Tanner Foust atop the standings, nearly out of reach of their nearest rivals.
Speed leads the field, holding a nine-point advantage over teammate Foust. A good finish at COTA will earn the driver of the No. 41 Oberto Circle K Beetle Rallycross his fourth-consecutive championship triumph and place him in the history books as the first winner of the new-for-2018 ARX series.
Despite his lead in the standings and a return to the COTA venue where he claimed his first victory of the 2018 season, Speed does not discount the possibility of his title hopes being derailed.
"Anything can happen in racing, and that's even truer when it comes to rallycross," said Speed. "Our mantra for the weekend will be to stay consistent and out of trouble. This is the first chance my family's had to come to a race this year, so I'm looking forward to enjoying it with them."
Faust must gain maximum points on his teammate for a chance to come away with a championship crown—his first since 2012. The No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle Rallycross driver will be aiming for a return to the top step of the podium, bookending an ARX season that began with victory at Silverstone, England.
“We’re gunning for a win at COTA, so I’m looking forward to putting on a show for the fans at the front of the field,” said Foust. “Since I’m chasing in points, I can afford to take a few more chances on track to come away with a victory. I’m excited for a good race.”
Once again, ARX drivers will share the track with competitors from its sister World Rallycross championship this weekend, and a few guest entrants will add an element of volatility to the contest.
The finale of the 2018 ARX championship will be livestreamed on the ARX Rallycross Facebook page on Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30. A highlight broadcast show will air on CBS Sports Wednesday, October 3 at 8 PM (ET).
