Volkswagen Atlas named 2021 Family Car of the Year by Cars.com
Feb 11, 2021
- Comfortable ride quality and easy handling, spacious third row and cargo area, and overall practicality set the Atlas apart from competitors
- Second year in a row as Family Car of the Year; 2018 model named best three-row SUV and took top honors as Cars.com’s Best Of model that year
Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce that Cars.com has named the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Family Car of the Year. The Atlas beat out nominees Ford Expedition and Kia Telluride for the top honor of Cars.com 2021 Family Car of the Year, and won over judges with its comfortable ride quality and easy handling, spacious third row and cargo area, and overall practicality.
“We designed and built the Atlas specifically for American families,” said Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “We’re thrilled for Atlas to be named Family Car of the Year by Cars.com for the second year running. Awards like this, along with the sales numbers, are proof that we’re nailing it with this car.”
“The Volkswagen Atlas offers the perfect blend of interior space and drivability that bests its competitors. The second and third rows seat adults comfortably—which is a rarity—and the excellent child-safety seat system earns the Atlas a repeat spot on Cars.com’s Car Seat Check Honor Roll,” says Jenni Newman, Cars.com editor-in-chief. “An added bonus is the cargo space: The Atlas offers plenty of room behind the third row to fit all the items families need for short and long trips. The Volkswagen Atlas is a family-friendly SUV that endures the test of time.”
Any 2021 vehicle is eligible for the Cars.com Family Car of the Year award regardless of when it was introduced or updated. The award’s criteria include crash test results, safety features, and the accommodation of family members and their belongings whether that be cargo or car safety seats. The additional family-friendly features and overall excellence of the vehicle also play an important role in the overall selection. Standout features for the Atlas include the suite of standard and available driver-assistance features and its straight-A grades in Cars.com’s Car Seat Check in 2020 and 2019. This is the fourth Atlas award from Cars.com. The 2020 model was named 2020 Family Car of the Year, and the 2018 Atlas took top honors in the 2017 Three-Row SUV Challenge and was named Best of 2018.
Starting at $31,545 MSRP for the 2.0 liter S model, the 2021 Atlas is available in eight trim levels. Atlas is offered with a choice of two powertrains—a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter VR6® engine. For the first time, the four-cylinder engine is available on top trims, and 4Motion® all-wheel can be paired with either engine. For 2021, Atlas offers a bolder design as well as interior upgrades, advanced connectivity, new available driver-assistance features, and broadened powertrain availability.
