Daily News panel of judges commended the Golf’s performance, safety ratings, and luxury car-rivaling fit-and-finish

HERNDON, VA (April 5, 2017) — Volkswagen of America, Inc. is pleased to announce that the Volkswagen Golf has earned the honors of Best Small Car in the 2017 Daily News Autos Awards. A panel of eight automotive journalists ranked 2017 models across 16 categories, in the order they would recommend them to family, friends, and co-workers.

“We are delighted that the Daily News has chosen the Golf as its Best Small Car for 2017,” said Hendrik Muth, Senior Vice President, Product Marketing & Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “The Golf is an incredible combination of performance, style, and technology, with a fun-to-drive nature that is decisively Volkswagen.”

“No other small car touches the depth and breadth of purpose found within the Golf family,” remarked Christian Wardlaw, Editor, New York Daily News Autos. “That it is fun to drive even in its most basic format and supplies all kinds of utility simply serves to cement the Golf's superiority.”

The Golf’s compact turbocharged and direct-injection 1.8-liter four-cylinder TSI® gasoline engine produces 170 horsepower at 4,500 rpm and torque peaks at 199 pound-feet with the 6-speed automatic transmission (184 pound-feet with the 5-speed manual transmission). Models equipped with the manual transmission achieve an EPA estimated 25 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway, while models equipped with the automatic transmission achieve 25 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

In choosing its winners, the Daily News Autos panel of jurors considered all 2017 model year vehicles with a base price of less than $100,000. In order to be considered, vehicles were required to have been on sale and available to consumers on or before February 1, 2017. For more on the Daily News Autos Awards, click here.
